Hekla
Hekla is a closed electronic communication network for sending health data between entities in the healthcare field. All the country's health institutions, all pharmacies, the Social Insurance Administration, Iceland Health Insurance, the Directorate of Health and other concerned entities are connected to Hekla, which makes it possible to send electronic data between different software systems in a secure, standardised and easy way.
Optimisation and security
Electronic transmission of health data via Hekla has a variety of benefits; it increases patient safety, improves services, and saves time and money. About two million messages are sent via Hekla every day, or about 712 million a year, including around 500 thousand doctor's letters.
The Hekla Health Network has been in use in Iceland since 2007. Today, all of Iceland's health institutions, all pharmacies, the Social Insurance Administration, Iceland Health Insurance, the Directorate of Health and others are connected to the network
Hekla is the only general health network in Iceland and makes it possible to send electronic data between different software systems in a secure, standardised and easy way.
